(AP Photo/Michael Probst) FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - It may trail the historic impact of Charles Lindbergh's 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic, but the Spirit of St. Louis also did not have a wingspan wider than a football field or space for more than 500 passengers. For plane builder Airbus and German airline Lufthansa AG, the A380's first flight to North America, which took off on time at 9 a.m. Monday, is a chance to show off the superjumbo to potential U.S. buyers and to the airports they hope will be flight bases for the double-decker jet. "We're talking about an airplane that is representing aviation in the 21st century in terms of efficiency," said Jens Bischoff, Lufthansa's vice-president for the Americas.

Volvo Aero and Swedish Government Investing SEK 126 M to Develop ...
STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Volvo Aero (Nasdaq:VOLV) (STO:VOLVA) (STO:VOLVB) and the Swedish Government are each investing SEK 63 M when the government authority Vinnova distributes money for the first time to a commercial demonstrator program in the aerospace industry. The investment will be used in the company's development of lightweight components for more fuel efficient, and thereby more environmentally compatible, aircraft engines. Volvo Aero's application "Swedish demonstrator for environmentally compatible aircraft engines" is receiving part financing from Vinnova of SEK 63 M, which will be paid in installments from 2007 through 2010. Volvo Aero will invest the same amount during the period. Vinnova's decision is positive for Volvo Aero, which has worked for sometime for Sweden to gain a national program to develop more environmentally compatible air transport.
Riverside Airshow plans new stunts
Don't be alarmed if you see a magenta and white plane tumbling nose over tail over Riverside. Don't worry about the white vintage airplane looping around with no engine running, either. Those are just two of the many spectacles planned for Riverside Airshow 2007 at the Riverside Airport on March 31. "It's an amazing show this year," said Tom Miller, organizer of the event, which is celebrating its 15th year. Two of the new acts include aerobatic performances by Doug Jardine, of Murrieta, and Frank Donnelly, who flies out of Cable Airport in Upland. Although this year marks Jardine's first aerobatic performance at the air show, he first attended it 14 years ago to show off a plane on the ground. At this year's event, Jardine will be up in the clouds aboard his magenta and white Sukhoi 26MX.
